David D. McKiernan, who led ground forces during the 2003 Iraq invasion and took over four months ago as head of the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan.

Speaking in Washington yesterday, McKiernan described Afghanistan as "a far more complex environment than I ever found in Iraq." The country's mountainous terrain, rural population, poverty, illiteracy, 400 major tribal networks and history of civil war all make for unique challenges, he said.

"The word I don't use for Afghanistan is 'surge,' " McKiernan stressed, saying that what is required is a "sustained commitment" to a counterinsurgency effort that could last many years and would ultimately require a political, not military, solution.

--Political solutions aren't military surges--Stop the Lieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06836780283985585966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3376979407376313013.post-90829021617110477782008-10-02T21:28:00.000-07:002008-10-02T21:28:00.000-07:00Wrong. The "surge" is putting a bunch of extra troops into Iraq, which is exactly what McKiernan wants to do in Afghanistan. A surge by any other name is still a surge. I'm a Soldier so I know a little about this. Also, Palin got the name wrong, but Biden never said it either. Neither of them score points here.CJhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16213445923298952600noreply@blogger.com
